I went into my hive yesterday morning to find my queen and see if she'd started laying eggs yet. It was a little early to check, but I'm glad I did. When I pulled out my first frame, I found this... The bees are supposed to build their wax comb within the frame, in a nice even and flat pattern. But, as I learned in bee school, sometimes a colony introduced to a new hive with a caged queen, will build a structure like this one around the queen's cage. So it is a problem, but a common enough one and fairly easy to solve. All I had to do was take it off. Yup, that's all. Yup, that's how I got stung. It turns out, the bees get upset when you destroy their hard work. I hope I won't have to do that again! Now that I've gotten my first sting out of the way, I feel like an official beekeeper.
Other accomplishments yesterday include, easily spotting my queen, Elizabeth Woodville (not an easy task sometimes!) and graduating from beekeeping school (while my new sting was still swelling.)

I make a hedgehog for the royal wedding
As part of our retro buffet I made a cheese and pineapple and cheese and cocktail onion hedgehog. I waited until we'd watched the wedding as I wasn't organised enough before. It's taken me bloody ages! What a pallaver that was! No wonder no one makes them anymore.
I bought Canadian mature cheddar even though I was told to buy "crap cheese" I ignored it. I should have listened as the cheese

I'm Tweeting the royal wedding live for LOVE magazine
I'm Tweeting the royal wedding tomorrow morning for LOVE magazine. My gorgeous friend Giles Deacon is keeping me company which will definitely be lots of fun. I'm getting rather excited now, I do love a wedding and this one's going to be pretty amazing.
I've Sky plussed every Wills and Kate documentary this week, I shall have a look at those in a bit. I've studied the guest list and I'm ready

I buy yet more sequins
Photography by Honer AkrawiMona Johannesson
There must be a helpline or something! I know it's the wrong time of year but I love sequins and I love a bargain. Inspired by pictures like these I found another little number I couldn't resist.
Tallulah is modelling it for me. The jacket is a perfect fit but sadly I can't do the zip up to the top on the trousers! Time for that holiday diet I

Easter Bees...
I've always thought honey bees were very cool and Sean encouraged me to pursue my interest. So, I did and I discovered the Hampden County Beekeepers Association. I've been going to beekeeping school since January. Sean was even able to join me a few times when he wasn't in NYC rehearsing for the CudLife Tour (coming soon to a city near you). We've both enjoyed bee school and have definitely learned a lot. What do I do with all that knowledge? Start a hive of course!
Tom from the HCBA drove all the way down to Georgia to pick up bees for this season's new hives, and on Easter morning the bees had arrived in MA. I was so excited to pick up my package! And I'll be honest, I was a little nervous too. Bees sting you know! It looks like they like me, I made it through the whole day without a single sting!
Here are some pictures...
Our package, in my lap in the car on the way home. Here's the Queen cage. She's not visible but definitely in there. Her name is Elizabeth Woodville. How do you get the bees into the hive? You dump them of course!Look at all those bees!As a first timer, I feel completely comfortable saying the install went great! The only thing I did wrong was forgetting to put an empty super above the bottom brood box when I dumped the bees. I had to put it on after I poured them out, and I managed to do it and only crush one poor little bee. Oops.
So, as we speak, my new bees are working hard to eat through the candy and free their queen. I'm going to leave them to it, but I'll check in on them Wednesday to make sure she is out of her cage and laying them eggs.
I'll post more soon!
RIP Poly Styrene

Poly Styrene(1957-2011)
I was very sad to hear that Poly Styrene, the front woman of ground-breaking punk band X-Ray Spex died yesterday aged fifty three after a battle with cancer. I was due to interview Poly for the blog but sadly we didn't get a date confirmed in time.

Happy Easter
I hope everyone's having a lovely break. Hasn't the weather been fabulous for once?
I went to a Birthday party on Saturday night, then an after party and didn't get home until last night. I've had a brilliant time but with catching up on sleep I've had no time to blog. Now I'm off for a picnic with The Actor and a group of friends in London Fields. I haven't sorted out the picnic, I'm not

KiD CuDi...
My husband Sean who spent more than a decade riffing guitar for the hardcore heroes of Hatebreed, has done a musical 180, and has a new job...Check him out! He's playing guitar for KiD CuDi. So, unfortunately for me, this means he'll be touring again. A lot. But, fortunately for any fans of KiD CuDi, hip hop or music in general, Sean will soon be in a city near you, back on those rock guitars. I've seen the show (3 times actually) and I highly recommend it, bias aside, you'll love it. Also on tour, our friend Cage Palko.

Dinner with the de Havilland's
Yesterday I interviewed the fabulous Terry de Havilland and his gorgeous wife Liz. What a wonderful couple they are.
Terry's shoes are works of art. There's a jaw dropping collection of new and vintage de Havilland's at his studio. I was like a kid in a sweet shop! I could go absolutely mental in there!
It's going to take a while to put the interview together as I plan to use a lot of images

THE NEW YORK DOLLS
I figured it was about time I did a post on one of my top five all time favourite bands, the New York fuckin' Dolls. I love everything about the Dolls - their image, attitude, legend, personality (crisis), but more than anything - of course - their music, especially their self-titled debut, gritty rock n' roll at its finest. They came on quick and burned out fast, but left in their wake a legend that the world was only ready for 10 years later. At famed nightclub Max's Kansas City, the Dolls were undisputed royalty, but Midwestern 15-year-old boys (the bulk of the Circus-reading, music-buying audience) didn't understand this hard-hitting New York band whose guitarist played riffs like Keith Richards and wore heels like their slutty older sister. All photos by Bob Gruen, scanned by me. Part 1 of several blogs I plan to do on the Dolls.
With their producer, Todd Rundgren:
